Aalborg University (AAU) was established in 1974. Despite it being a “young” university compared to many European universities, it has become an important player in the international scene with top-rated scientific environments.

The trademark of AAU is the PBL learning method. It was one of the building stones from the beginning and AAU has proudly and competently developed and carried this into the new millennium.

AAU is strong on applied sciences and the students’ close contact to the outside world throughout their studies.

In 2015 the total number of staff was 3,560; 20,750 students whereof 3,340 were international students and a total of 947 ph.d.-students.

AAU is the university in Denmark with the most efficient students (average studying time for a master’s degree is 5.2 years, the nominated time is 5 years) and also the most successful university in attracting students from a non-academic background, thereby being a major contributor to creating equal opportunities in the surrounding society.

Aalborg University offers education and research within the fields of natural sciences, social sciences, humanities, technical and health sciences. The university currently consolidates and further develops its profile as a dynamic and innovative research and educational institution oriented towards the surrounding world. Aalborg University is internationally renowned as a leading educational institution within problem based learning (PBL). Through problem based learning AAU wishes to secure flexible interaction between theory and practice in the programmes. One of the principles of the PBL model is that students work on a problem oriented basis and complete projects of an advanced academic standard.  This approach is characterized by combining a central engagement in local, regional, and national issues with an active commitment to international collaboration.

The University awards Bachelors, Master’s, and PhD degrees in various fields within the different programmes, institutes and centres. Aalborg University is a network university, collaborating with regional and national educational institutions in Denmark as well as the creation of consortia and collaboration networks with other national and international universities, plus industry partners.  

The university is internationally recognized for establishing world-class interdisciplinary research environments. At present, the university has the students divided on three campuses in Aalborg, Copenhagen and Esbjerg. AAU focuses on strong national and international world class research groups representing the academic areas of the university. In addition, Aalborg University secures a high quality level within research and within the research based programmes by, for instance, providing special support to the most promising researcher talents. Aalborg University will contribute to the project with the overall management of the project and practical support for design, development and execution of the project.

AAU has considerable experience within curriculum studies research as well as in the field of multidisciplinary studies in particular the field related to developing new forms of learning and methodologies based on research but importantly related to practice.

The institution will contribute with competencies in the fields of Architecture, Design, Architectural Theory and History and represents a spectrum of specializations within the field of civil engineering, architecture, design, architectural theory and history. The work of the institution and the involvement of relevant staff will be managed by Head of Center for Food Science, Design & Experience at Department of Civil Engineering, Anna Marie Fisker. She has a long record of doing research in how to integrate research based learning with practise; also she has over the past 10 years supervised and is supervising 12 PhD students.
